How Sade Sati works
In Vedic astrology, Sade Sati (“the seven and a half”) is the period when slow-moving Saturn transits three consecutive signs centred on your natal Moon: the 12th sign before it (Rising), the Moon sign itself (Peak), and the 2nd sign after it (Setting). Saturn spends about 2.5 years in each, for roughly 7.5 years total.
Because it depends only on Saturn’s position relative to your Moon, the phase can be determined from your Moon sign alone. This tool reads Saturn’s current sidereal longitude (Lahiri ayanamsa) to tell you exactly which phase is active today and to estimate the window’s edges.
Sade Sati is traditionally a time of maturation and restructuring — Saturn asking you to take responsibility and shed what no longer serves. Its felt weight varies with the Moorthy and the chart’s strength, which the full app evaluates.
Frequently asked questions
What is Sade Sati?
Sade Sati is the roughly seven-and-a-half year period when transiting Saturn moves through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd signs counted from your natal Moon. It unfolds in three phases — Rising, Peak, and Setting — each lasting about 2.5 years.
What do I need to check it?
Only your Moon sign (Janma Rashi). Sade Sati is defined entirely by Saturn’s position relative to your natal Moon, so no birth time or place is required for the phase itself. If you don’t know your Moon sign, generate your free chart first.
Is Sade Sati always bad?
No. Sade Sati is a period of consolidation, maturity, and restructuring rather than simple misfortune. Its felt intensity depends on factors like the Moorthy (Gold/Silver/Copper/Iron) and the strength of the involved signs in your chart — refinements available in the full Veda Lumina app.
How accurate are the dates here?
The phase (Rising/Peak/Setting) is exact for today. The start and end dates shown are approximate — they are scanned weekly and do not resolve Saturn’s retrograde re-entries across sign boundaries. The app provides the precise day-by-day timeline.
How long does each phase last?
Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, so each of the three Sade Sati phases — Rising, Peak, Setting — lasts roughly 2.5 years, for about 7.5 years in total. Retrograde motion can make Saturn dip back into the previous sign briefly, slightly extending a phase.
How often does Sade Sati occur?
Saturn takes about 29.5 years to circle the zodiac, so Sade Sati returns roughly every 30 years. Most people experience it two or three times in a lifetime — the first, second and third cycles are often felt differently as life circumstances change.
What is the difference between the three phases?
Rising (Saturn in the 12th from the Moon) is the onset — endings, expenses and a sense of mounting pressure. Peak (Saturn over the Moon sign) is the most intense — it touches the mind, home and core duties. Setting (Saturn in the 2nd) is the release — the lessons consolidate and the weight gradually lifts.
Is Sade Sati the same as Dhaiya (Kantaka Shani)?
No. Dhaiya, or the “small panoti,” is a separate ~2.5-year period when Saturn transits the 4th or 8th sign from your Moon — not the 12th, 1st or 2nd. This tool checks Sade Sati specifically; the full app evaluates Dhaiya as well.
Does Sade Sati affect everyone the same way?
No. Its felt intensity depends on the Moorthy (Gold, Silver, Copper or Iron — based on the transit Moon at Saturn’s ingress), the strength of the involved signs in your own chart, and any concurrent dasha. Two people in the same phase can experience it very differently.
What can I do during Sade Sati?
Traditional guidance emphasises discipline, patience, service and consolidation rather than fear. Practices associated with Saturn — steady routine, honest work, helping the less fortunate, and Saturn-related observances — are commonly recommended. The app offers chart-specific remedial guidance.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Not for the phase itself — Sade Sati depends only on your Moon sign, which most people already know. Birth year is optional and only used to label the cycle number. If you are unsure of your Moon sign, generate your free chart first.
